Conscience Vote

A conscience (or free) vote is a type of vote in a legislative body where legislators may vote according to their personal conscience rather than according to their party’s line. In Victoria conscience votes are rare and usually only employed in the case of controversial legislation. In 2017 the Victorian parliament allowed members a conscience vote when considering an assisted dying bill. The bill passed and is now law.
