A politician in either the Legislative Assembly (Lower House) or Legislative Council (Upper House) who is neither with the government nor the opposition. There are currently eleven crossbenchers in the Upper House, including MP Fiona Patten, a former sex worker. In order to pass laws the government needs the support of at least three crossbenchers in the Upper House.
